NORMA LOY has always been one of France's best Post-Punk bands.
The core of the band consists of singer Chelsea and keyboardist Usher. They founded the band in 1981.Since 1982 they rivalled against the dominance of Great- Britain in this genre. They may not have gained the attention and reward many other bands recieved, but that didn't stop them from becoming a cult band.

The shifts in line-up during Norma Loy's career were quite impressive, Chelsea and Usher choose not to work with a fixed number of musicians, but to let the line-up depend on the kind of album they wanted to make.

Norma Loy a toujours été un groupe atypique dans la scène française des années 80. Sonnant comme une pure émanation de l'Après-Punk, Norma Loy a souvent été assimilé au mouvement Cold Wave / New Wave français (récemment on les a vu apparaître dans l'expo, le livre, le disque et le documentaire Les Jeunes Gens Modernes de JP Sanz et Agnès B) alors
qu'en réalité leur univers artistique embrasse des champs bien plus amples que ceux de l'underground du début des 80's.

Norma Loy ne s'est jamais cantonné à un seul genre musical, graphique ou lexical et ce depuis que le groupe fut monté en 1980 par Anthon Shield / Usher et Chelsea / Reed013 (sur les cendres de leur duo électronique Coït Bergman) accompagnés par de nombreux musiciens au fil du temps et des différentes incarnations du groupe.

Si leur premier maxi «One» comprend « Romance » leur mythique premier single de 1981 sonnant très Cold Wave minimaliste, la suite fut bien plus riche, intrigante et variée. De « Sacrifice » à « Un / Real » les deux entités de Norma Loy n'ont eu de cesse d'explorer autant la new wave ou la cold que le punk électronique, la chanson expérimentale que le rock gothique, l'industriel bruitiste que la pop éclairée, avec un talent de composition et d'écriture qui les distingue de leurs frères d'armes de l'époque.

Ce groupe culte n'a jamais réellement accédé au succès qu'il méritait, mais nous savons très bien qu'artistiquement il vaut mieux être jugé à l'aune d'une œuvre pléthorique qu'à travers un succès éphémère. Si l'on prend le temps de parcourir une œuvre aussi constante que passionnante disséminée à travers les albums de Norma Loy mais aussi les divers projets parallèles d'Usher (avec Die Puppe, Black Egg ou Adan & Ilse) ou le travail graphique et textuel de Reed O13 on se rend compte que ce groupe représente parfaitement ce que la vague Post Punk française a pu accoucher de mieux après la fin des années 70.

Renaissant une nouvelle fois de ses cendres, (7 ans séparent le nouvel album du précédent), l'entité Norma Loy vient de produire « Baphomet » un album déjà décrit par la presse comme magistral et contenant 14 titres aussi ténébreux que puissants, à la fois beaux et touchants, relevés d'une voix majestueuse et des compositions classieuses. Ce nouvel album est le plus beau cadeau à ses fans que la paire Usher / Chelsea a pu composer depuis trois décennies.
